## Why do heat pumps work better in Naples than up north?

Because a heat pump moves existing heat rather than creating it, so its output depends on how warm the outside air is. In a northern winter the air runs short of usable heat and the unit stalls. Naples winter air stays warm enough that a correctly sized unit keeps producing through most of the season.
That is the whole mechanism, and it explains why the same product gets very different reviews depending on where the reviewer lives. National advice about heat pumps is usually written for climates nothing like this one. A buyer in Ohio and a buyer in Naples are not buying the same machine in any sense that matters, because the machine’s fuel is the air outside, and the air outside is not the same air.
Inside the cabinet the process is simple to picture. A fan pulls outside air across a coil, refrigerant in the coil soaks up the warmth in that air, a compressor concentrates it, and a heat exchanger passes it into the pool water flowing through. Nothing is burned. The electricity you buy runs the fan and the compressor; the warmth itself is collected, not created. It is a common choice in [the Vineyards](https://www.splashpoolsllc.com/pool-remodeling-the-vineyards/) and [Pelican Bay](https://www.splashpoolsllc.com/pool-remodeling-pelican-bay/), where owners swim most of the year rather than a season, and where steady running matters more than fast recovery.
The genuine limit is a cold snap. On the coldest handful of nights each winter the air has less warmth to give up, output drops, and a unit that was keeping pace comfortably in November works harder for less in January. For most owners that amounts to a few slow mornings a year. ## Heat pump or gas heater?

Heat pump for steady, all-season warmth at a lower running cost. Gas for fast recovery, for a spa, or for a pool used occasionally where you want it warm on demand. The deciding question is not which is better, it is whether you heat continuously or in bursts.
A heat pump raises temperature slowly and holds it efficiently, so it suits a pool kept at temperature. Asking one to bring a cold pool up quickly for a weekend is asking it to do the thing it is worst at.
Gas is the opposite: costly to run continuously, excellent at recovering quickly. It makes heat at a fierce rate and does not care what the air outside is doing, which is exactly what you want for occasional on-demand warmth and exactly what you do not want for six months of steady holding.
So the deciding question is a usage question, and it sorts most households cleanly. If you live here and hold the pool at temperature through the season, a heat pump is doing its best work and the running cost favors it more with every month it runs. If you visit for stretches and want the pool warm for the fortnight you are down, or if the spa is the main event, gas earns its keep in bursts. And if the property has a pool and a spa doing different jobs, both units is a legitimate answer rather than a hedge: the heat pump holds the pool, the gas heater sprints the spa.
The snowbird version deserves its own paragraph, because half of Collier County lives it. If you arrive in December and leave in April, the setup that works is a heat pump holding the season, started ahead of your flight on a schedule so the water is right the week you land, with gas on the spa for the cool evenings. Nobody stands over a thermostat. The system is told the dates and does the arithmetic.

## What a heat pump costs to run, honestly

A heat pump buys electricity to move heat rather than to make it, so the warmth delivered to the water is a multiple of the energy purchased. That is the whole running cost argument, and it is real, but it only holds when the unit spends its life holding a pool at temperature across a long season rather than sprinting a cold pool up for a weekend.
The mechanism is the saving. A gas heater can never deliver more heat than is in the fuel it burns. A heat pump is not generating heat at all, it is collecting it from the air and concentrating it, so the electricity on your bill pays for transport rather than creation. Federal guidance says the same thing without the poetry: the Department of Energy’s [Better Buildings fact sheet](https://betterbuildingssolutioncenter.energy.gov/sites/default/files/attachments/Pool%20efficiency_.pdf) lists heat pumps as the more efficient way to heat a pool, especially with warm outside air, and pool heaters as a category have been held to [federal energy conservation standards since 1990](https://www.energy.gov/cmei/buildings/consumer-pool-heaters), so even the baseline hardware sits on an efficiency floor.
Owners cancel the advantage in two ways, and both are avoidable. The first is undersizing. A unit too small for its pool never reaches the temperature it was asked to hold, so it never cycles off. It runs flat out around the clock, the bill climbs, and the owner reasonably concludes the technology is a con. The sizing section below exists to prevent that outcome.
The second is running without a schedule. A heat pump managed by a controller that understands time of day, season and your calendar costs meaningfully less to run than the same unit left to its own devices, because holding is cheap and recovering is not. What we will not do is put a number on any of this. Your running cost depends on the temperature you hold, how many months you hold it, whether the pool is screened and covered, and the electrical rate you pay, and any figure published without knowing those things is a guess wearing a suit. The honest version of this section is the mechanism, which is real, and the sizing visit, which is where the mechanism gets applied to your pool.

## What does correct heat pump sizing depend on?

Pool volume, surface area, whether the pool is screened, how exposed it is to wind, and the temperature you want to hold. Surface area drives heat loss more than volume, which is why a wide shallow pool needs more unit than its gallons alone would suggest.
Screening changes the calculation noticeably, and most Naples pools are screened. A cage cuts the wind that strips heat off the water surface, which shrinks the unit you need. It also cuts the direct sun that would otherwise warm the pool for nothing, which grows it. The two effects do not cancel neatly; they depend on the cage, the exposure and the season. A sizing method that never asks whether the pool is screened is not a method, it is a guess.
The other thing worth knowing is how manufacturers rate these units. A heat pump specification sheet quotes output at a warm standard test condition and again at a cooler one, and the cooler figure is substantially lower. Hayward’s [HeatPro installation manual](https://www.hayward.com/media/akeneo_connector/asset_files/5/1/51300056501_RevG_7a0e.pdf), for instance, publishes capacity at both an 80 degree and a 50 degree air condition, and the cool-air rating sits well below the nameplate. Sizing for Naples means sizing against the January number for the months you actually intend to swim, not the number on the box.
This is why the neighbor with the useless heat pump is nearly always telling a sizing story rather than a technology story. The unit that runs all day in January and never gets the pool warm was not defeated by Florida. It was too small on the day it was fitted, or it was chosen off the summer rating for a winter job, and it has been running flat out at the bottom of its curve ever since, which is the most expensive and least satisfying way a heat pump can live.
The rest of the inputs are the ones the capsule names. Surface area drives loss more than volume, because the surface is where evaporation and wind do their work, so a wide shallow pool needs more unit than its gallons suggest. Exposure matters: a pool open to the breeze off a lake works harder than one tucked behind the house. And the target temperature matters most of all, because every degree you hold is a degree the unit must replace all night, every night, for the whole season.

## What does heat pump installation involve?

A heat pump is an electrical appliance, so the panel and breaker capacity get confirmed before a unit is chosen. After that it needs a level pad with clear airflow on all sides, a route for condensate, and siting that respects the fan’s sound near lanais and property lines. A correctly running unit also drips water in normal operation, which surprises owners who mistake it for a pool leak.
The electrical check comes first because it can change the shopping list. A heat pump draws a meaningful, continuous load and wants its own correctly sized breaker, the right wire, and the bonding Florida requires of everything on a pool pad. Some panels take that in stride. Others are already full, and the honest options become a smaller unit, panel work, or a rethink. Discovering this after the unit is sitting on the pad is the expensive order of operations, which is why we look at the panel before we talk model numbers.
The pad itself is unglamorous and decides how the unit lives. Level, stable, and open: a heat pump breathes, so it needs clear air on its sides, no soffit or overhang pressing down close above it, and never an enclosed space where it would inhale its own cooled exhaust. Manufacturer clearance requirements exist because a starved unit loses output and works its fan harder to get it. Shrubs count, and shrubs grow.
Then there is the water. A heat pump pulls humid air across a cold coil, so it condenses water out of the air whenever it runs; Hayward’s manual puts normal condensate at several gallons an hour in humid conditions, which describes most of the year here. A steady drip under a running heat pump is the machine working, not the pool escaping. The test is simple: switch the unit off for a few hours with the filter pump still running. If the puddle dries up, it was condensate. Siting is also where the noise question gets settled, and it is better settled on paper than after the concrete. The fan is not loud, but it is constant while running, and constant is what matters beside a lanai, a bedroom window or a neighbor’s boundary. The shortest pipe run is usually the cheapest install and sometimes the worst placement. A few extra feet of plumbing that move the unit to the quiet side of the house is money spent once, instead of a low hum resented for a decade.
Two housekeeping notes. When warmth is non-negotiable on the coldest nights of the year, when the spa is the main event and wants fast recovery to a high temperature, or when the pool is heated occasionally rather than held warm. Those cases point to gas, or to a heat pump and a gas heater sharing the work. A recommendation that cannot say “not this one” is a brochure.
The cold-snap household first. Naples winters are mild, but they are not uniform, and a few nights each year the air genuinely cools. A heat pump’s output dips exactly then, which is tolerable if the pool can sit a degree or two down for a morning and intolerable if it cannot: a therapy routine, a houseful of visiting grandchildren, a pool that must be right on the one week that matters. The spa-first household is the second case. A spa wants to go from ambient to very warm in minutes, at hours nobody plans in advance, and that is a sprint by definition. A heat pump asked to do it will keep you waiting long enough to change your mind about the soak. The occasional heater is the third. If the pool runs unheated most of the year and you warm it a handful of times, for visitors, for a birthday, for one cool spell, you are buying recovery, not holding. Gas does recovery. A heat pump in that house spends most of its life as a box on the pad, and its efficiency advantage never gets enough running hours to show itself.
And then the hybrid, which is not a failure to decide. Plenty of properties here run a heat pump for the long steady season and a gas heater for the sprints, each doing the one job it is good at. It costs more up front than either alone and earns it back by never compromising.
