Pool coping is the capping course between the pool shell and the deck. Replacement removes failing coping, repairs the bond beam and bed beneath it, and sets new travertine, precast or cantilever. Part one

## What does hollow-sounding coping actually mean?

That the coping has separated from what it was bonded to. On a canal lot that is usually because the deck has moved relative to the pool and the bond beam has taken the load. It is a structural finding, not a cosmetic one, and it is the single most misdiagnosed thing on a Naples pool.
Start with the sound itself. Coping that is properly bonded through its bed to the structure below answers a knuckle tap with a short, dense note. Coping that has separated has a void under it, and the same tap comes back hollow and drummy. The sound is not the problem. It is the report of a problem lower down.
The bond beam is the reinforced top of the pool shell. Coping sits on it, and the deck ties into it, so when the beam moves or degrades, everything attached to it follows. The next section explains the beam properly, because it decides everything else on this page.
Canal homes see this constantly, because the deck moves near the seawall while the pool shell, tied to a much deeper structure, does not. Something has to give at the joint, and the coping is the visible part of the joint. Map it before you call anyone. Tap the full perimeter, note where the hollow starts and stops, which side of the pool it sits on, and whether the deck or the tile in the same stretch shows anything. Ten minutes with a screwdriver handle tells you more than most site visits, and it tells us exactly where to look when we come.
This is why a quote that says "re-set the coping" without mentioning the beam is quoting the visible work. The stone will look right and the same section will sound hollow again.

Part two

## The bond beam: the part of your pool everything at the edge sits on

The bond beam is the reinforced concrete ring at the top of the pool shell, thicker and more heavily reinforced than the wall below it. The coping sits on top of it, the waterline tile band sits against its face, and the deck ties into it. When the beam cracks or the deck moves against it, all three report it, often at the same time.
A gunite pool is one continuous concrete structure, floor and walls shot as a single shell. The National Plasterers Council puts the principle plainly in its technical bulletins: a pool's watertightness comes from the combination of the shotcrete or concrete structure and the interior finish [(National Plasterers Council, Technical Resources)](https://nationalplastererscouncil.com/technical-resources/). The bond beam is where that structure finishes at the top. It is a thickened, steel-reinforced ring that stiffens the whole shell, carries the coping, and gives the deck something to tie into.
That is why one movement produces three symptoms at once. Hollow coping on top of the beam. Loose tile on its face. A deck crack running parallel to the pool where the deck edge has dropped against it. Owners in this position often collect three quotes from three trades for what is one finding. If two or more of those symptoms share the same stretch of edge, treat them as one problem until someone proves otherwise.
A boundary, so this page stays honest about its own scope. The horizontal course on top of the beam, and the joint where the deck meets it, are what this page covers. The beam is also continuous with the shell below it, which matters when a crack shows lower down the wall. Part three

## Why re-set coping goes hollow again

Because mortar gets blamed for a beam problem. Mortar is what the first quote replaced, so mortar takes the fall when the run drums again. If the beam under it was cracked, or the deck is still moving against it, new mortar bonds new stone to the same moving substrate and fails on the same schedule. Florida heat does not unstick sound coping from a sound beam.
The pattern is common enough in Collier County to describe from memory. The coping was re-set with fresh mortar within the last couple of years. The same run sounds hollow again, and the company that did the work says mortar just fails in Florida heat. Heat and salt air are real here, but they work on exposed joints slowly and evenly, over many years. They do not detach a whole run of stone from a sound beam in two seasons. Movement does that.
The re-set quote is not usually dishonest. It is what you get when a job is priced from what can be seen from the deck. Lifting the stone, exposing the beam and finding the separation takes demolition, and demolition costs money, so the smaller quote wins and the cause stays buried under new mortar. The stone is new. The substrate is the same one that just failed.
Repairing the beam back to sound structure means cutting the damaged concrete back until what remains is solid, treating any exposed steel, and rebuilding the beam so the new material is bonded to the old and properly cured before anything is set on top of it. It is concrete work, not tile work, and it is exactly the part of the job a re-set skips.
So the useful filter for a second quote is one question: what will be done about the beam? An answer that describes exposing it and repairing what is found there is quoting the job. An answer that goes straight to the stone is quoting the surface, and the tap test will grade that work within a couple of years.

Part four

## How is it repaired properly?

Remove the failing coping, expose the bond beam, repair it back to sound structure, rebuild the bed, then set new coping. Where the deck has moved, the deck edge is dealt with at the same time, because putting new coping against a deck that is still moving repeats the failure.
The sequence matters and it runs in one direction. Beam, then bed, then coping, then the deck ties in. Doing the deck first means demolishing part of it to reach the beam. Doing the coping before the beam means setting good stone on bad structure. Every shortcut in this job is a re-ordering of that sequence, and every one of them gets paid for twice.
Where the deck ties back in, it is not mortared to the coping. The two are separated by a movement joint, a flexible sealant-filled gap that lets the deck and the pool structure move without prying each other apart. Sealant joints in decks and pavements have their own standard guide [(ASTM C1193, Standard Guide for Use of Joint Sealants)](https://store.astm.org/c1193-16r23.html), and the owner's version is short: if the gap between your deck and your coping is rigid, cracked or missing, that joint is not doing its job, and the coping is taking load it was never meant to carry.

Part five

## Travertine, precast or cantilever?

Travertine suits properties where the deck is natural stone and the coping should read as part of it. Precast is consistent and hard-wearing. Cantilever gives a clean concrete edge poured over the beam, which suits a more contemporary deck but ties the coping and deck together permanently.
Cantilever is worth understanding before choosing it. It is poured as one with the deck edge, so the coping and the deck become a single element. That gives the clean, uninterrupted line people choose it for, and it also means future work on either one means dealing with both. There is no course of stone to lift, so reaching the beam later means saw-cutting concrete.
That is the honest answer to a question owners bring us mid-remodel: a contractor has told them cantilever is riskier on a canal lot and could not really explain why. The why is movement history. On a lot where the deck has already moved against the pool once, tying the two together permanently converts the next episode of movement into concrete demolition instead of stone re-setting. On a stable inland lot that risk is small and cantilever is a fine choice. On the water, it is a cost decision, not a style decision.

Precast earns its place by being consistent: uniform dimensions, a formed drip edge, and predictable behavior in the bed. Whatever goes on top, the beam under it decides the lifespan.

Part six

## One contractor for the beam, the stone and the deck

Coping is the seam where pool construction and hardscape meet, and a split job leaves that seam belonging to nobody. Paver crews enter the job from the deck side and stop at the pool structure. Pool crews stop at the water. Here the beam repair, the coping and the deck edge it ties into are one scope, sequenced by one accountable contractor.
The split is built into how the trades are organized, not into anyone's bad intent. A paver company is set up to lift, bed and lay stone, and the pool's structure sits outside its license and its comfort. A pool company is set up for the shell and the equipment, and the deck is somebody else's surface. The coping sits exactly between them, which is why it is the most misquoted item in the yard: each trade quotes its own half of the seam and the cause lives in the middle.

There is also a plain safety reason not to leave the seam unowned. The pool edge is the most walked surface in the yard, used barefoot, wet, and often after dark, and a lifted stone or an open joint there gets found by a guest before it gets found by the owner. A hazard like that is quick to correct and worth correcting ahead of the wider scope, not with it.

How do I check my own coping?

Tap along it with a knuckle or the handle of a screwdriver. Solid sections come back short and dense; separated sections sound hollow and drummy. Work the whole perimeter rather than just the suspect stretch, and map where the hollow runs start and stop, which side of the pool they sit on, and whether the deck or tile nearby shows anything. That map tells you whether it is one spot or the whole run.

Can you replace only the hollow section?

Sometimes. If the rest of the beam is genuinely sound and the movement that caused the separation has stopped, a partial replacement holds. If the deck is still moving, a partial repair simply fails at the next section along. The answer comes from the tap map and the deck edge, not from the budget: we open enough to see the beam and let the beam decide.

Does this mean my pool is structurally unsound?

Not usually. A separated bond beam is a repair, not a condemnation, and it is a normal outcome of deck movement on a canal lot. The shell below it is typically fine. What it does mean is that patching the surface will not resolve it, and that whatever moved the deck against the beam needs correcting so the repair holds.

A trip hazard at the pool edge is worth correcting promptly regardless of the wider scope, because the edge is exactly where an unsteady step does the most harm. Correcting the immediate hazard first and planning the full repair separately is often the sensible order, and it is how we would sequence it. Will the deck have to come up?

The deck edge nearest the coping usually does, because that is where the beam is reached and where the movement joint between deck and coping gets rebuilt. How far back depends on the extent of the separation and what the beam looks like once exposed. We open the smallest area that reaches sound structure, and on a paver deck the same stones usually go back down afterwards.

How much does coping replacement cost in Naples?

It depends on the length of the run, what the bond beam needs once it is exposed, and whether the deck edge has to be corrected at the same time so the new coping is not set against something still moving.
