NAPLES, FL · DECKS & PAVERS

# Pool decks built on a base that holds its line.
Pavers almost never fail. Bases do. We build the six inches beneath the stone to the published specification, so the deck you admire this year still reads true in ten.

THE SPLASH POOLS STANDARD

## The stone is the finish. The base is the promise.
When a Naples deck goes wavy, sinks at the coping or opens at the joints, the stone is almost always still perfect, and the six inches underneath it are not. We build that unseen layer to the published numbers: compacted aggregate placed in lifts, proofed to 98% Proctor density (CMHA, 2022), finished flat within an eighth of an inch.
Because the deck ties into the coping, the coping sits on the pool's bond beam, and the drainage plane protects the shell. We handle all of it as one trade, under one contract, with one name accountable for the whole seam.

Finish, tile, coping and deck all meet at the waterline. That seam is where a split job shows first.

DIAGNOSIS BEFORE PRESCRIPTION

## Three ways Naples decks fail
They photograph the same. They are entirely different jobs, which is why we look before we quote.

01

### The wavy deck
Undulation by the house is almost always compaction. The specification calls for at least six inches of compacted base under vehicular areas. A thin or under-compacted base settles no matter how fine the stone above it.
THE FIX · BASE REBUILD, SAME STONES RESET

02

### The dropped row at the water
Royal Harbor, Isles of Capri and the Vanderbilt canals sit on dredged fill that consolidates for decades, and tide moves fines out through the seawall backfill. We inspect the seawall side before touching a single paver.
THE FIX · CLOSE THE WASHOUT, THEN REBUILD

03

### The hollow coping
One or two hollow stones are mortar fatigue, routine. A run along one side, with a cracked tile line, points at the bond beam itself. A paver company can only re-stick the stone. We check the beam first.
THE FIX · BEAM INSPECTED BEFORE RE-BEDDING

Built once, so it doesn't move.

TWO-MINUTE DIAGNOSTIC

## What is your deck telling you?
Four questions. An honest read on what is likely happening underneath. Before anyone quotes you anything.

THE MATERIAL LIBRARY

## Chosen barefoot, in August
In Naples the deciding factor is heat underfoot, then salt air, then the architecture. Drag the sun across the afternoon and compare.

AN HONEST COMPARISON

## One piece, or thousands

POURED CONCRETE

### A slab has one way to move
When sandy coastal ground shifts, and it does, a monolithic slab relieves the movement the only way it can: it cracks. Control joints decide where, not whether. The crack reads as a line pointing at your pool, and the patch never quite matches.
Still the fair budget choice over stable, well-compacted ground, and we will say so when it is true. Be wary of stamped overlays: they fade unevenly in this sun.

PAVERS · OUR RECOMMENDATION

### A paver deck articulates
The same ground movement shows as a gentle low spot, never a crack, and a low spot is repairable by the unit. Lift the affected stones, rebuild the base beneath them, reset the very same pavers. No saw cuts. No color-matched patch. No seam announcing the repair.
On a pool deck this matters most at the coping line. The joint where a moving slab shows itself first.

WHAT DRIVES THE NUMBER

## Four factors matter more than square footage
Set them honestly and see what shapes the job. No figure appears here on purpose: an honest number exists only after we have stood on the deck.

THE SHAPE OF THE JOB

Two decks the same size can be very different jobs. The coping, the beam beneath it and the ground decide. We quote after seeing it.

WHY THE POOL CONTRACTOR

## Four things at the water's edge belong to both trades at once
Split between a paver company and a pool company, each failure at the seam has two plausible owners, and therefore none. The paver company calls the hollow coping structural. The pool company says it did not install the deck. Neither is lying. You are still holding the problem.
Here, both sides of the seam sit under one contract, one schedule, and one name that answers the phone.

I. The coping
The pool's trim and the deck's border, one stone, two trades.

II. The bond beam
Pool structure that the deck loads. Repaired before coping, coping set before the deck ties in.

III. The expansion joint
The detail that lets two systems move without breaking each other, and only works if someone actually installs it.

IV. The drainage plane
The pitch of the whole deck decides whether every summer storm runs away from the shell, or against it.
