## Pavers do not fail. Bases do

A concrete paver is a dense manufactured unit that does not wear out on a residential deck in any relevant timeframe. What fails is the layer underneath. Where the aggregate base is too shallow, poorly graded or inadequately compacted, it consolidates under load, and the surface follows it down. That is the dip, the rut and the lifted edge people call about.
The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute specifies base depth by application, with vehicular installations requiring substantially more compacted aggregate than a patio, and compaction to a specified density rather than to whatever a plate compactor achieves in a couple of passes. Skipping either is invisible on the day and obvious two years later.
The second failure is joint sand. Sand washes out of joints over time and takes the interlock with it, which lets individual units move independently and lets weeds establish. Correcting that early, by cleaning, re-sanding and sealing, is a fraction of the cost of the settlement it eventually contributes to.
