Should you replace your pool light during a remodel?
Almost always, and the reason is timing rather than the light itself. The pool is already empty, the surface is already coming off, and the one moment when the niche and the conduit are genuinely accessible is the moment you have already paid for. What surprises people is what the job actually is. Replacing a pool light is not really about choosing a fixture, it is about whether the conduit already buried in your pool wall will accept a new cord, and that question has an answer before anybody buys anything.
Replacing an underwater pool light means pulling a new fixture cord through the existing conduit, using the old cord as a leader. Hayward's retrofit guide has you cut the existing cord and tape the new cord to it so the old one pulls the new one through (Hayward, 2012)1. The fixture then sits in the existing niche, which must be installed per Article 680 of the National Electrical Code and properly grounded and bonded (Hayward, 2012)2. Whether your niche and conduit accept a given light is a compatibility question settled before purchase.
The short version
Why is a remodel the right time to deal with the light?
Consider what replacing a light costs you outside a remodel. The pool has to be lowered or drained enough to reach the niche, somebody has to come out for that one task, and the work happens around a finish you are trying not to damage.
During a resurface, all of that is already happening. The water is out, the surface is being removed anyway, and the niche is exposed at the moment somebody is standing in the pool with tools.
The same argument applies to anything else buried in the shell. If a light is original to a pool being refinished for the second or third time, the odds that its cord, gasket and fixture are all in good order are not high, and the moment to find out is while the pool is empty rather than after it is full.
This is the same logic behind doing the interior, tile and coping together rather than as three visits, which is how resurfacing is scoped here. The marginal cost of addressing the light during that window is far lower than the standalone version of the same task.
The honest exception: if the existing light works, the fixture is sound and you are happy with it, there is no obligation to change it. Access being cheap is a reason to look, not a reason to replace.
Is an LED retrofit a fixture job or a conduit job?
Read that sequence again, because it explains why the fixture is the last thing to worry about. The existing conduit runs from the niche to a junction box or transformer, buried in the pool wall and the deck. Nobody is digging it up.
So the new light has to travel the path the old one occupied. The guide's pre-installation checklist includes having duct tape for taping the new cord to the old cord when pulling through conduit (Hayward, 2012)1, which is the whole method in one line.
There is a practical detail that trips people. The guide notes there may be a grommet or sealant at the light cord's point of entry into the niche, and that removing this should allow the cord to pull freely through the conduit (Hayward, 2012)1. A cord that will not move is usually sealed rather than stuck.
The guide also has you verify the cord moves freely before committing, and warns that too much tape may prevent the cord from moving freely through the conduit (Hayward, 2012)1. That test happens before the old light is fully out of play.
The consequence for a homeowner is simple. The right first question is not which light looks best. It is whether this pool's conduit will take the cord that comes with it, and that is answered by looking, not by reading a catalog.
What has to be true before you buy a light?
That checklist is worth treating as a purchase gate rather than as install-day paperwork, because three of the four items can disqualify a fixture you have already bought.
Voltage first. The retrofit guide is explicit that it applies only where the current light is a low voltage 12 volt type, and directs you to a different guide if the light is 120 volt (Hayward, 2012)1. Those are different jobs and confusing them is not a small error.
Then the transformer. The checklist calls for a pool transformer capable of supplying 70 watts at 12 to 14 volts, and the guide has you locate the existing transformer and configure it to output 14 volts if possible (Hayward, 2012)1. An old transformer sized for an old lamp is a real constraint.
Then niche compatibility, which the guide defers to a table in the fixture manual, and which is exactly the item people assume rather than check (Hayward, 2012)1. It also flags that when replacing certain older lights, a tab on the new fixture may need to be removed.
The fourth item is the one to read carefully: that the light fixture housing, the niche, has been installed per the National Electrical Code (Hayward, 2012)1. On an older pool that is a question rather than an assumption, and it is the reason the person answering it should be qualified to.
Does a pool light have a required installation depth?
A window with both a top and a bottom surprises most people, who assume the only rule is being deep enough.
The manual carries an exception for a fixture installed in an area of the pool not used for swimming where the lens is adequately guarded to keep any person from contacting it (Hayward, 2012)2. For an ordinary backyard pool that exception rarely applies.
Now connect it to remodeling, because this is where it matters and where nobody raises it. Both ends of that window are measured from the normal water level. Anything that changes the water level, the wall, or the floor changes the geometry the fixture sits in.
That is directly relevant if you are also making the pool shallower. Raising a floor, altering a wall or changing where the waterline sits can move a fixture's position relative to that window, and it is far cheaper to establish that on the drawing than to discover it when the pool is full.
The same applies to a raised or lowered waterline tile line. If the finished water level will not be where it was, say so before the light is set, not after.
What does the bonding requirement mean for an older niche?
We are quoting the manufacturer rather than the code itself here, deliberately. The National Electrical Code is a copyrighted standard and reproducing it on a web page is not ours to do, but Hayward's restatement of what its own product requires carries the same practical instruction.
On an older pool the bonding connection is a real item to inspect rather than assume. The retrofit guide notes that some niches may have an 8AWG connection from the junction box to the niche, and instructs that this connection must not be interrupted when installing the new light (Hayward, 2012)1. That is easy to disturb and easy not to notice.
Bonding is the same principle we described at the equipment pad in equipment corrosion in a flood zone, where salt air works on exactly these connections. A bonding conductor that has corroded at a lug is doing less than the drawing says it is.
There is one documented exception worth knowing, and it is product specific. Hayward notes that its low profile all plastic niche does not require bonding or grounding, because of the all plastic design (Hayward, 2012)2. That is a property of that component, not a general rule about pool lights.
Which is the broader point of this section. These are specifications for particular equipment, and your own fixture and your own manual govern your own pool.
Is replacing a pool light a homeowner job?
We are going to quote that warning rather than paraphrase it, because paraphrase softens it. Hayward's safety instructions state that improper installation may result in death or serious injury to bathers or service personnel or others by way of electric shock, that electrical power must be disconnected before installing or servicing the equipment, and that the product is to be installed by qualified personnel only (Hayward, 2012)2.
The retrofit guide's own checklist includes the line that you are qualified to work on electrical wiring and understand electric code requirements and wiring methods (Hayward, 2012)1. It is written as a box to tick before starting, which is the manufacturer telling you where the boundary is.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission lists underwater lights among the places electricity is present around a pool (CPSC, 2026)4. We are not going to reach for a casualty figure to make that point, because the instruction does not change: this is work for somebody qualified, and that is true whether the number is large or small.
The commissioning checklist in the manual gives a sense of what qualified means in practice. It asks for confirmation that a safety listed pool and spa isolation transformer has been used to supply 14 volts, that transformer output wiring has not been tied or shorted to ground, that the cord jacket is not damaged, cut or spliced except as noted, and that any extensions or splices are made only in a safety listed pool or spa junction box (Hayward, 2012)2.
That is a list of things to verify rather than a list of things to hope for, and it is the reason this task sits with the electrical trade rather than with the homeowner.
What should you settle before the pool is refilled?
Start with the pull. If the cord has been proven to move freely through the conduit before the old light is gone, the job is straightforward. If it has not, that is the moment to find out, with the pool empty and everything reachable.
Second, confirm the transformer matches the fixture. The checklist calls for one capable of supplying 70 watts at 12 to 14 volts, with the output set to 14 volts where possible (Hayward, 2012)1, and the ColorLogic driver documentation likewise begins with cord length and minimum required voltage (Hayward, 2016)3.
Third, check the depth window against the finished water level rather than the current one. Not less than 4 inches and no more than 72 inches below normal water level (Hayward, 2012)2 is a specification about where the water will be when the job is done.
Fourth, confirm the bonding connection at the niche is intact and not interrupted (Hayward, 2012)1. This is the item most likely to be disturbed during other work and least likely to be looked at afterward.
And if any of that is unclear, it is a question to raise while the pool is still empty. Everything on this list is inexpensive to check now and awkward to revisit once the pool is full and the finish is curing.
